Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) Broadband

Openreach’s Fibre-To-The-Premises (FTTP) product suite finally removes the dependence on the venerable copper phone line. If you are in the relatively limited areas that have access to FTTP (or have previously paid another provider to install FTTPoD), you can get a “data only” service using fibre directly into your property – the upside of which is that the speed of your service between your property and the exchange is no longer affected by line length.

Like all our broadband products, our FTTP packages have full, unfiltered Internet access and static IP addressing as standard.

All of our FTTP products have the same £60 installation charge and a 12 month minimum term. If you migrate away to another FTTP provider using Openreach after your term ends, we won’t charge you a termination fee. If you need to simply cease service, there is a cease charge levied upon us which we have to charge you for – currently £12.44.

Demand and wifi may affect throughput

A note about throughput

You will notice that the higher speed services above come with an indicative ‘speed range’ despite the fact they are delivered over what Openreach likes to call “full fibre”. The reality is that although your connection to your property is no longer affected by line length you are now using a time-divided shared access technology called GPON (or in some cases, XGS-PON).

This means that you share the connection that runs back to the exchange with a number of other properties, and you have ‘time share’ access to that fibre link as a result. This introduces an additional potential point of contention on top of the potential pinch point on the backhaul connections that get the traffic from your exchange to our network core.

This means that your experience of your service can be affected at peak times when the contention will be at it’s highest.

Accordingly, typical maximums are indicated to properly set your expectation that you will not, for example, always be able to achieve 1000Mbps on the FTTP 1000 product, even though that is the theoretical maximum of the connection between you and us.

In some circumstances the throughput might be substantially less for reasons that are entirely outside of our control – it will also invariably be affected by the capacity of your network equipment, the speed of your computer, and even the capacity of the system you are accessing at the other end or how far away it is geographically from you.

The most likely cause of throughput limitations is trying to use WiFi on the higher speed services without having your wifi professionally installed and tuned to facilitate the highest possible throughput around your property, where you will often have a (relatively!) poor experience. You will always get the best experience using a network cable and should strongly consider wired connectivity whenever possible to get the best out of services in excess of 100-300Mbps.
